Once there was a little earthworm named Sammy. He lived in the earth beneath an old log in a forest clearing.
One day Sammy asked his daddy if he could go above ground and play in the sun.
Absolutely not!
replied his daddy. We worms do not fair well in the sun. And the birds ... oh, the danger of the birds!
But daddy ...
began Sammy.
In winter,
interrupted his daddy, I would say yes. In autumn, maybe. But in spring time and summer, never!
After breakfast, while his daddy was reading his book, Sammy quietly wiggled his way up to the surface and onto the log.
The sun was brilliant and warm. A gentle breeze rustled the tender spring leaves on the edge of the clearing. A bird sang a pleasant song.
What a wonderful day!
Sammy thought. He stretched himself out in the sun to listen to the lovely meadow music, and soon fell fast asleep.
Not long after, a snake slithered into the clearing. Upon seeing little Sammy sleeping in the sun, the snake exclaimed, What a wonderful snack!
